Oldham Liberal Democrat Leader calls on government to close sex offenders’ loophole

Parliamentary news
Two years on from the Oldham Liberal Democrats calling for the law to be changed to make illegal sexual contact between persons in ‘positions of trust’ and young adults in their care, Group Leader Councillor Howard Sykes MBE has written to the Deputy Prime Minister calling for long-overdue action. In September 2019, the Liberal Democrats brought a motion before the Full Council in support the NSPCC ‘Closing the loophole’ campaign. The children’s charity wants the Position of Trust law changed to cover all roles where an adult holds a position of power, care or responsibility over a 16-or 17-year old and to make it illegal for that adult to engage in sexual activity with that young person, even in circumstances where this activity is mutually-consensual. The motion received cross-party support.…

Wendy Chamberlain speech in emergency sleaze debate: PM is missing in action

Parliamentary news
Liberal Democrat Chief Whip Wendy Chamberlain has criticised the Government over their handling of the Owen Paterson saga during her emergency debate and called for an end to sleaze and corruption in politics. In her speech she said: "Previous Prime Ministers and previous Governments have all had their failings. However, it is a long time since we have seen, not just this stench of sleaze, but the absolute lack of resolve to do anything about it. "They say a fish rots from the head down. And doesn’t it say it all, that our Prime Minister has not turned up today to answer our questions? "You can’t help but feel that he thinks the rules just don’t apply to him. Time and again, this Government has refused to properly investigate allegations…

Sewage vote: Government ignores millions of people

Parliamentary news
Liberal Democrat MPs have voted against the Government's weak proposal to tackling sewage in local rivers. Commenting after the vote Liberal Democrat Communities & Rural Affairs Spokesperson Tim Farron MP said: "Today, the government ignored millions of people who demanded action to save our treasured rivers and lakes. This is a slap in the face for what has been one of the boldest and more inspiring environmental campaigns in recent years. "We needed to see legislation with real teeth today which gave water companies hard deadlines and targets. Instead, we have a flimsy new law which won't be strong enough to hold water companies to account. "We called today for a Sewage Tax, to make water companies pay for the mess they've made. The Liberal Democrats will continue to demand…

Chamberlain on Cox: Public will rightly be gobsmacked

Parliamentary news
Responding to reports that former attorney general Geoffrey Cox has a second job that allegedly saw him vote remotely from the Caribbean, take advantage of lockdown rules and earn £1million from legal work in the past year, Liberal Democrat Cheif Whip Wendy Chamberlain said: "The public will rightly be gobsmacked by these reports. "Why was a Tory MP apparently spending time on the other side of the world advising a known tax haven instead of supporting his constituents? For the Justice Secretary to defend this behaviour as legitimate is frankly astonishing. "The bigger irony here is that the government has ordered an inquiry into corruption and political cronyism in the British Virgin Islands, while refusing to carry one out at home."

Ed Davey visits North Shropshire: Lib Dems the challengers to the Tories

Parliamentary news
Liberal Democrat Leader, Sir Ed Davey MP, has visited Whitchurch to lend his backing to the local Liberal Democrats’ campaign for North Shropshire. Sir Ed is the first party leader to visit the constituency since Owen Paterson resigned. At the recent local elections in May, the Liberal Democrats finished second in North Shropshire with the Greens and Labour in a distant third and fourth place. Across Shropshire, the Liberal Democrats have more councillors than any other party other than the Conservatives. Earlier this year, the Liberal Democrats won a historic parliamentary by-election in Chesham and Amersham against the Conservatives with both Labour and the Greens receiving less than 5% of the vote. In a rally with local Liberal Democrat supporters in Whitchurch, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Ed Davey…

Sewage Tax on water companies to raise £340 million for rivers

Sewage Tax on water companies to raise £340 million for rivers

Parliamentary news
The Leader of the Liberal Democrats has called for a “Sewage Tax” on water companies to prevent raw sewage polluting rivers and lakes. Today MPs will vote again on the Environment Bill which includes new rules on sewage being dumped into rivers. Water companies pumped polluting and harmful raw sewage in national water sources over 400,000 times last year. The River Trust reveals more than half of England’s rivers are currently failing to pass cleanliness tests due to water companies actions. However, the government is proposing taxpayers foot the bill for sewage system improvements, instead of water companies. The “Sewage Tax” would tax the profits of water companies, which last year made pre-tax profits of £2.2 billion despite polluting Britain’s rivers with dangerous levels of sewage. The proposal would be…

Emergency Debate: PM should show up or show an abdication of leadership

Parliamentary news
The Liberal Democrats have this morning called on Boris Johnson to show up to the emergency debate on standards today in Parliament. They have said his failure to do so would be a shocking "abdication of leadership". The debate, secured by the Liberal Democrats follows last week’s vote in which Conservative MPs voted to overturn the suspension of Owen Paterson and overhaul Parliament’s anti-sleaze rules. Commenting ahead her debate, Liberal Democrat Chief Whip Wendy Chamberlain MP said: "A fish rots from the head down, and it’s the same with Boris Johnson’s corrupt and sleazy government. If Johnson fails to appear at the emergency debate on sleaze today it'll be a shocking abdication of leadership. “From the redecoration of his flat to holidays reportedly paid for by Tory party donors, the…

Don’t drop it, deposit it

Borough news
As the world heats up, Oldham Liberal Democrats want to encourage residents to recycle more cans and bottles to help our planet, make our borough cleaner and greener, and earn themselves some money through a local deposit return scheme. Councillor Howard Sykes MBE, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, has written to the Leader of Oldham Council suggesting we work to establish such a scheme for Oldham and across the Greater Manchester city-region. Deposit return, or reversed vending machines are used by customers to return drink cans, glass bottles, and plastic containers for recycling and they are rewarded with a small payment or a voucher to use against shopping purchases. In Europe, such schemes have been in place for decades, and it is routine for consumers to pay a deposit…

John Major comments a “damning indictment” of Johnson’s corrupt Conservative government

Parliamentary news
Responding to Sir John Major's comments on the Today Programme this morning that Boris Johnson's government is "un-conservative" and "potentially politically corrupt", Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper MP said: "For a former Conservative Prime Minister to describe this government as being politically corrupt is frankly astonishing and a damning indictment of the Tories under Boris Johnson. "John Major is simply saying what millions of lifelong Tory voters are thinking: Boris Johnson's Conservatives no longer represent them. “This week’s scandal is just the latest in a long string of attempts to undermine our democratic traditions and shared values of decency, honesty and transparency. "Right across former Conservative heartlands in the Blue Wall, people are sick of being taken for granted by a government mired in sleaze and corruption."
