Schools White Paper: Half-baked proposals miss the mark

The Liberal Democrats have slammed the Schools White Paper as “half-baked” as it launches today, saying they have “no ambition or imagination”. The Party has moved to criticise the proposals after they focused on restructures and the National Tutoring Programme rather than diverting more funding towards catch-up for children who have been hit hard by lost learning during the pandemic or helping children to build their skills and experiences. Education Spokesperson Munira Wilson MP has said the proposals “completely miss the mark” and do not come close to righting the “wrongs” of the Department for Education over the course of the pandemic, such as botched school reopenings and a failure to get laptops to children who needed them. "This Government has let down and abandoned our children time and time again over the past two years and history looks doomed to repeat itself. It's clear they have no plan for dealing with rising numbers of infections and absences. "The Transport Secretary must come before Parliament to provide the urgent answers that P&O workers and their families deserve. Rishi Sunak’s tax hikes will lead to a £44 billion bombshell by 2024, equivalent to almost £1,600 per UK household. The stark figures were buried in the small print of today’s Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) report accompanying the Spring Statement. It finds that the net impact of the tax policies announced by Rishi Sunak since March 2020, including today’s tax changes, will mean tax receipts are £43.8 billion higher in 2024-25. The OBR also reveals the impact of Rishi Sunak’s stealth tax and freezing of income tax thresholds, which will cost taxpayers £17.5 billion a year. The Liberal Democrats have called on the UK Government and the energy regulator Ofgem to ban Russian oil and gas company Gazprom from supplying energy to UK businesses. The company is licensed by the energy regulator Ofgem to supply gas and electricity to UK businesses - including schools, hospitals and local authorities. Liberal Democrats peer Jonny Oates today asked Government ministers in the House of Lords if they are planning to rescind Gazprom’s supply licence and to place the Gazprom supplier into “special administration”, in effect nationalising the company.
