Government still failing to provide essential protection for carers

Parliamentary news
Responding to Health Secretary’s press conference, Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey said: “Promoting the use of the Care Badge, initially announced in March 2019, is welcome. Carers throughout the country are making enormous sacrifices to care for people during the Coronavirus crisis and must be recognised alongside NHS workers.  “Yet while we welcome the badge, Ministers have still not managed to provide all carers with the protection they desperately need. “It is regrettably becoming clear that the Government is failing to deliver on key promises to care workers, especially over supplies of protective equipment. “We simply cannot send tens of thousands of frontline workers to care for people as they fight this virus without adequate protection. The lack of sufficient protective equipment is a national scandal; many health and care…

Care home coronavirus outbreaks show need for PPE and testing for frontline staff

Parliamentary news
Responding to the daily press conference in which it was reported that 13.5% of care homes have had an outbreak of coronavirus, with 92 care homes declaring an outbreak in the past 24 hours alone, Liberal Democrat Health Spokesperson Munira Wilson said: “Care homes provide a home for some of the most elderly and vulnerable people right across our country. Statistics showing that 13.5% of care homes have faced an outbreak of coronavirus are therefore incredibly worrying. “The Liberal Democrats have long been calling for the staff at care homes, along with NHS staff and social care workers, to be provided with adequate personal protective equipment as well as tests to diagnose if they have the virus. “These frontline workers are caring for the most vulnerable in our society. It's vital the…

PPE rollout must extend to all social care workers

Parliamentary news
Responding to the Health Secretary, Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Munira Wilson, said: “Frontline workers are putting their lives on the line every single day to protect us. In turn, we have a moral obligation to do all we can to protect them. While unacceptably late, it is welcome news that the Government has finally come forward with a plan to distribute PPE. “As an absolute priority, the Government must ensure an urgent rollout of PPE and testing not just to all NHS staff but also all social care workers in order to protect both themselves and the most vulnerable. This rollout out must also be accompanied by the clear, unequivocal guidance which keeps all our frontline staff safe.”

Government must strengthen guidance on PPE in social care settings

Parliamentary news
Responding to reports in the Health Service Journal that plans are in place to deliver 30 million pieces of personal protective equipment to social care providers, Munira Wilson, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Health, Wellbeing and Social Care said: “Many social care staff, who are on the frontline of this crisis, will feel a huge sense of relief at the prospect of finally receiving personal protective equipment. “However, the suggestion from Ministers that supplies should be prioritised for those who currently have "close unavoidable contact with confirmed or suspected Covid-19 cases" is like locking the stable door after the horse has bolted. We should be doing everything possible to stop transmission of the virus into care settings in the first place, as well as onward transmission when a patient already has the…

Government fails to produce plan to end social care crisis

Parliamentary news
Responding to the Health Secretary's letter to MPs announcing his plans for cross-party talks on a long-term solution for the social care crisis, Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey said: “Our country faces a social care crisis. One in 11 care worker roles are reportedly unfilled and people have been spending exorbitant amounts of money funding their care, with many being forced to sell their homes. “People deserve better. It is disappointing, therefore, that in seeking cross-party consensus, the Government has not bothered to set out any of their own thinking, analysis or even some criteria and principles.  “If this process is to be truly cross-party, the Government must commit to being open and transparent.  “In any future care model, the Government must not be allowed to forget the collective…

Urgent action needed in mental health and learning disability services – Lib Dems

Parliamentary news
Today the publication of CQC’s ‘State of Care 2018/19’ report reveals a rise of inpatient services for people with learning disabilities and/or autism that were rated inadequate. The report also shows a rise of child and adolescent mental health inpatient services rated inadequate. Responding to the report, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Vince Cable said: “It is rare for a public body such as the Care Quality Commission to be so scathing of the effects of Government policy. Their honesty is to be congratulated. “They highlight graphically the decline in standards for mental health and learning disability inpatient services. This means some of the most vulnerable are not receiving anything like the standards of care that they need. “Staffing shortages, coupled with inadequate funding solutions has…

Conservatives pass one of worst pieces of legislation ever witnessed

Parliamentary news
Speaking after the Mental Capacity (Amendment) Bill was passed in the House of Commons tonight by just 58 votes, former Liberal Democrat Care Minister Norman Lamb MP said: “Hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people are at risk of unlawfully having their freedom restricted and receiving inappropriate care. That is the deeply flawed system this Bill should have fixed, but instead the Conservatives produced one of the worst pieces of legislation ever seen.  “I set the Government two tests at the beginning of this process. Does the new system safeguard individuals’ human rights and does the new system result in very vulnerable people being better protected? Conservative Ministers have failed both of these tests.  “It is incredibly worrying that the Conservative Government are still pursuing this change in legislation when there has…

Thousands dying waiting for social care as Govt ignores crisis

Parliamentary news
Responding to the research by Age UK showing that more than 50,000 older people have now died waiting in vain for care during the 700 days since the Government first said it would publish a Social Care Green Paper, Former Liberal Democrat Health Minister Norman Lamb said: “These figures are tragic for many families and the stories of some of those who have been impacted should give many in government and across politics pause for thought. “People are turning for help in their old age and help is not there. Despite the crisis in adult social care the Conservatives are consistently and consciously underfunding these services and the social care green paper promised in March 2017 has now been delayed six times.“The Conservative Government is incapable of solving this problem themselves. They must now…

Chancellor promises end of austerity, but no end to Oldham Council funding cuts

Borough news, Parliamentary news
The Leader of the Opposition and of the Liberal Democrat Group, Councillor Howard Sykes MBE, has welcomed the promise by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in today’s Budget that ‘austerity is coming to an end’ and his recognition that local authorities have ‘significantly contributed’ towards the UK Government in addressing austerity, albeit through being forced to accept swingeing general cuts to their funding. Councillor Sykes has also welcomed the promised extra funding to tackle potholes across the country and for new services to help those in mental health crisis, contemplating suicide, or living with infirmity or disabilities; however the Chancellor was short on detail when it came to rolling back the massive funding cuts that local authorities have faced since 2010. “Some of this so called funding will not happen…
