GDP reaction: Recovery must leaves nobody behind

Parliamentary news
Responding the the GDP figures showing the UK economy shrank by a record 9.9% in 2020, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Christine Jardine MP said: “We have all seen the devastating effect Coronavirus has had in the past year and the hardship it has created, but these figures put into stark reality what a challenge we face in repairing lives and the economy. “The Chancellor must use the spring Budget to outline how he will build a sustainable recovery that leaves nobody behind. To do that we will need longer, more extensive furlough support that will bring those who've been excluded under the umbrella of Government support and a renewal of the Universal Credit uplift. “The Government must rule out an austerity budget and commit to the long-term investment to create…

UK recovery damaged by Amsterdam taking London’s crown

Parliamentary news
Responding to the news that Amsterdam has overtaken London as Europe's share trading hub, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Christine Jardine said: “The news that Amsterdam has taken London's crown as Europe's leading share-trading hub will send shockwaves through the economy. "As well as the immediate impact on jobs in London this will have a profound effect on a vital UK industry. Our financial services industry creates hundreds of thousands of jobs across the country and contributes more than £70 billion of tax revenue - that is money we need to invest in a strong recovery. "The costs of Boris Johnson's botched trade deal with the EU are now mounting up. It is vital to the UK's recovery that the Prime Minister gets back around the negotiating table and secures a…

Sunak must not leave job creation to last minute

Parliamentary news
Responding to the latest unemployment figures from the ONS, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for the Treasury Christine Jardine said:“Covid-19 pandemic continues to wreak untold damage in the lives of millions of people, none of whom should be left to fight this crisis alone. “Mass unemployment poses a huge threat to families across the UK and the Chancellor must recognise that and immediately extend the safety net of the £20-per-week uplift to Universal Credit. But more than that we him to launch a large scale, comprehensive job creation drive– starting with fixing the shambolic Kickstart Scheme. “Rishi Sunak must show that he has abandoned his last-minute approach to support measures and take decisive action in the March budget, before even more working families pay the price.”

Conservative Government under greater pressure to make £20 Universal Credit rise permanent

Borough news, Parliamentary news
The Oldham Liberal Democrats have welcomed the vote in Parliament earlier this week as a sign that there is cross-party support for the £20 weekly uplift in Universal Credit, introduced at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, to be made permanent. At the end of an Opposition Day debate in the House of Commons, 278 Members of Parliament voted for the rise, putting pressure on the Conservative Government to extend it beyond the 31 March cut-off date. Amongst those MPs supporting the extension were all eleven Liberal Democrat Members of Parliament. There were no votes against, but, unfortunately, the vote is only advisory and not legally binding. Oldham Liberal Democrat Council Group Leader Councillor Howard Sykes MBE wrote to the Chancellor Rishi Sunak MP last October asking him to ‘make…

Responding to the news that a Supreme Court ruling is set to force insurers to pay out on disputed coronavirus claims Sarah Olney, Liberal Democrats Spokesperson for Business, said: “This is an excellent result and will provide a lifeline for many small businesses who have been plagued with worry and financial hardship throughout this pandemic. "Now they will finally be able to get the money they deserve and are entitled to."

Christine Jardine, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for the Treasury, will call for it to be included in a government support package for businesses in an adjournment debate she has secured in Parliament tomorrow (Weds). Christine will also call for the Government to come up with a long term strategy to help businesses cope with the enormous burden of debt that many will now face. Poor GDP figures show PM must negotiate adjustment period for businesses

Parliamentary news
Responding to the GDP figures released this morning, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Christine Jardine said: “The lack of recovery we're seeing in the GDP figures today is yet another a reminder that the economic effects of the pandemic are far from over, and people right across the UK continue to face immense hardship. "Ministers must not be complacent now we have a vaccine. Instead, they must step up to provide the support that's so desperately needed, particularly by the three million who are still excluded from any financial support from the Government. "The Government must also avoid risking more damage being done at the end of the transition period. The Prime Minister should negotiate a six-month Adjustment Period urgently to give struggling businesses much needed breathing space, rather than the…

Davey: Government must give UK business time to adjust

The Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey has today written to the Prime Minister calling on him to negotiate an adjustment period for British business of three to six months regardless of what happens with the trade deal negotiations with the EU. Chancellor needs to be much more ambitious in Spending Review

Parliamentary news
Responding to the Chancellor's announcement ahead of the Spending Review, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Christine Jardine said: "For people worried about work now or facing continued exclusion from government support, investment in job centres is no replacement for a serious economic strategy to protect and create jobs. "The country needs a radically new approach to the recovery that tackles deep-seated inequality, prioritises unparalleled infrastructure investment into the green economy of the future and ensures no one is left behind. "Before the Chancellor stands up in Parliament, he still has time to think again and listen to Liberal Democrat calls to support carers with an extra £4bn to local authorities, extending access to free school meals and providing mental health services can support everyone."

End the retreat in stable public sector funding, says Oldham Liberal Democrat Leader

Borough news
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has this week announced an extra £16.5 billion for Britain’s armed forces over four years, saying he was determined to “end the retreat” in military spending, but Oldham Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Howard Sykes MBE is disappointed that he has made no similar commitment on long-term funding for other public services. Commenting, Councillor Sykes said: “Whilst this is undoubtedly welcome news for our armed forces, public services such as local Councils, Police, Fire and Health struggle along with year-by-year announcements on funding by central government. We need a similar four-year plan. It would enable us to plan services more effectively and to make better use of the money that is allocated to us. “No one doubts the courage of our armed forces which has been tested…
