Better health services for Saddleworth

At the Oldham Council meeting on Wednesday 7th October 2018 Liberal Democrat Councillor Garth Harkness called for the council, as part of the Health Impact Assessment to bring more varied health services to Saddleworth. Councillor Garth Harkness said: “Liberal Democrats have long since campaigned for better health outcomes in this chamber including creating health equality for mental health and more access to defibrillators – both 24 hours and in public buildings. I support the creation of a Health Impact Assessment to make improvements in health and wellbeing.” Councillor Garth Harkness argued that evidence from government papers clearly points to delivering services locally and that the new cluster structure can be an opportunity for Saddleworth. Liberal Democrat Leader welcomes extra funding to help tackle Winter Health Crisis

Councillor Howard Sykes MBE, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group and Leader of the Opposition, has welcomed the recent announcement by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock MP, that over £1 million in extra money will be provided to Oldham this winter to help patients get home quicker from hospital after medical treatment and improve care that might prevent them being admitted to hospital in the first place.  Mr Hancock recently announced that Oldham will be receiving £1,122,354 in extra winter funding. Saddleworth Liberal Democrats have called on Oldham council and the NHS Oldham Clinical Commissioning group to work together to enhance Primary care health services in Saddleworth Liberal Democrat Councillor for Saddleworth North, Garth Harkness, said: “The NHS Oldham Clinical Commissioning group in Oldham are splitting the GP surgeries into clusters. Saddleworth would be in cluster 4 which would see it linked in with some practices in East Oldham.” John Eccles, Liberal Democrat campaigner, said: “The Cluster that Saddleworth sits in has nearly 55,000 patients. Saddleworth Medical Practice has the most patients. The staff are great  but it is bursting at the seams. Liberal Democrat Leader dismayed by smoking increase

The Leader of the Opposition and Liberal Democrat Group, Councillor Howard Sykes MBE, has expressed his dismay at the latest report showing an increase in smokers in Oldham Borough. The latest GP Patient Survey, run independently by Ipsos MORI on behalf of NHS England, which has just been published shows that the proportion of smokers in Oldham rose from 17pc to 19pc between 2015/16 and 2016/17.  The Greater Manchester average is 17.5pc.
