Local Liberal Democrat Councillor Alicia Marland said: “I set up the Crimewatch WhatsApp groups in Lees, Springhead and Grotton in January 2022 for neighbours to promote vigilance and increase awareness of criminal activities in each village and it has been a great success. However it became apparent that many residents were still feeling insecure and in need of more physical security devices for their homes and vehicles. Great turnout for community safety meeting

Great turnout for community safety meeting

Borough news
Grotton Pavilion welcomed a substantial – if suitably socially distanced – audience to a meeting with the local police team, Greenfield Community Safety organiser Lee Hudson, and Dobcross organiser Neal Killan. Local resident Alicia Marland, who set up the event and is coordinating the group, welcomed the positive response from the community, and thanked the contributors for their input. Alicia said: “Thanks to all the residents who attended tonight's community crime watch meeting in Grotton. What a fantastic turnout.  “It was a brilliant presentation from Lee who started the Greenfield scheme in 2017 who has successfully reduced crime through local initiatives and working closely with the police.” The idea of the community crime group is to have a simple, coordinated group which can alert local residents to potential issues in the area – whether that’s…

Lib Dems welcome Government’s “screeching u-turn” on Huawei

Parliamentary news
Responding to reports that the UK's mobile providers will be banned from buying new Huawei 5G equipment after 31 December 2020 and they must remove all Huawei 5G equipment from their networks by 2027, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Daisy Cooper said: “Liberal Democrats welcome this screeching u-turn from the Conservative Government. It is the right thing to do on grounds of national security and human rights and for our industrial strategy, but it's disappointing it took US action to make the Government to do the right thing. "The Government should now invest in developing this kind of technology here in the UK. Ministers must also prioritise maintaining strong partnerships with our European allies and Five Eyes to ensure any security risks are dealt with swiftly.…

Publishing Russia report top of the list for intelligence committee

Parliamentary news
Responding to confirmation that the House of Commons will be asked to approve membership of the intelligence and security committee on Monday, Liberal Democrat MP Wera Hobhouse said: “With the threat of coronavirus, people are rightly worried and need a Government they can trust. Boris Johnson has failed to do that with his conspicuous delay to reconvening the intelligence committee. “After months of pressure from Liberal Democrats and others, I am glad the committee is due to be restored. However, it should never have needed this fight. The Prime Minister has a lot to do to claw back public confidence. “At the top of the list for the intelligence committee must be forcing the Government to publish the report into Russian interference of our democracy, and before the summer recess…
