Hospitality fund reaction: Insult to pubs and restaurants on the brink

Parliamentary news
Responding to the Chancellor announcing a new package of support for hospitality businesses, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Christine Jardine MP said: "This is an insult to pubs and restaurants on the brink. The Chancellor must be living on another planet if he thinks this will be enough to save hospitality firms who have seen their Christmas bookings fall off the cliff in recent weeks. "It is simply far too little, too late for too few. "The Conservatives have buried themselves in their bunker, trying to save themselves rather than save the country from an economic crisis which is hitting family run businesses the hardest. This miserable offering will do nothing to reboot our economy and will fail to save thousands of independent businesses. "Instead of this feeble one off grant,…

Roadmap delay represents further blow to hospitality fears Sykes

Borough news, Parliamentary news
Oldham Liberal Democrat Leader, Councillor Howard Sykes MBE, fears the Prime Minister’s announcement that Covid-19 restrictions will last another month will mean yet more local pubs being lost, unless further financial support is soon forthcoming. “Whilst I understand that the Prime Minister has made this decision based upon scientific advice, the delay will put further pressure on hospitality business which have been impacted disproportionately by lockdowns and trading restrictions since March of last year”, said Councillor Sykes. Last week, the British Institute of Inn-keeping estimated that 1 in 10 pubs nationwide was expected to fail if there was a delay in the easing of restrictions, and the trade body UKHospitality has said that the delay will cost the sector around £3bn in sales. Councillor Sykes added: “Hospitality is one of…

PM urged to back hospitality sector with COVID Recovery Visa

Parliamentary news
Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran called on the Prime Minister to back the struggling hospitality sector at PMQs today by introducing a COVID Recovery Visa. The Oxford West and Abingdon MP raised the case of Kevin, a hotel manager in her constituency, who told her that even when the country fully opens up, his hotel “won’t be able to operate at full capacity due to chronic staff shortages.” Moran said the sector has been hit by a triple whammy of the pandemic, Brexit and the new immigration system: uncertainty in the sector due to the Government’s handling of the pandemic meaning workers are leaving for other jobs; Brexit means many EU citizens have left the UK; and the new immigration system means hospitality businesses can’t recruit enough people from abroad.…

Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Digital, Culture, Media, & Sport, Jamie Stone MP, has today brought a debate to Parliament on the issue of Government-backed insurance for live events. The Government has come under increasing pressure to underwrite contingency insurance for live events in a bid to prevent the cancellation of festivals and other live production this summer. The Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) has previously said that 92.5 per cent of members would not be able to proceed with their summer plans unless they were insured by the Government. Speaking after the debate, Mr Stone said: "I really am disappointed by the Government's approach to this whole thing. "They know the issue of insurance for live events falls under the responsibility of the Treasury but did not bother to send…

Barred! New Year blow to hospitality industry

Borough news
Under the latest government lockdown restrictions pubs and restaurants will be barred from selling alcohol to take away from their licensed premises or by click and collect. The new ruling means that from January 7 they can only sell alcohol if it is delivered to their customers’ homes. Liberal Democrat Leader, Councillor Howard Sykes MBE, thinks that is just plain wrong. Commenting he said: “Anyone can go to a supermarket, corner shop or off-licence to buy booze and take it away, but from this week our struggling pubs, micro-breweries and restaurants will be unable to. They can continue to sell food to customers from their premises, so why can’t they buy a few pints of fresh cask ale to go with it. “I asked the Council Leader at the December…
