Responding to an IFS briefing on the cost of living and the Chancellor’s Spring Statement, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Christine Jardine MP said: “The Chancellor cannot stand by and watch as households take the biggest hit to their living standards in fifty years.
“He needs to avert the real disaster that will be caused by his unfair national insurance tax hike and offer proper support to all those struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.
“The Chancellor must now put people above the figures in his spreadsheet.”
‘Heightened uncertainty and the spectre of inflation hang over the Spring Statement‘, a press notice by researchers from the Institute for Fiscal Studies, states the Chancellor “will either have to spend and borrow billions more, or allow a hit to household incomes bigger than at any time since at least the financial crisis and quite possibly since the 1970s.” Read the full briefing here.
